‘REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE’
Thursday, 22nd September 2016
The theme for the programme was ‘REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE’ and we added, ‘RETHINK’ to make it very appropriate for today’s times. This mantra was unheard in the days gone by, although the individual practices were commonplace in every household. It was how a generation lived, in spite of the different socio economic levels. The idea, therefore, was to identify and rediscover why this mantra is so relevant in today’s times and hence the ‘RETHINK” !
As a preamble to the main programme in the schools on the 22nd, we convened a meeting with the volunteer team at the clinic. A lot of activities were tossed up to exemplify the theme. However, we wished to answer the question, WHY ? and not WHAT ? or HOW ? … this led to an interesting discussion which was followed by the demonstration of an activity to highlight ‘REUSE” … turn the old news paper in to a utility carry bag.
The 22nd morning was very cloudy and it had been raining the previous night. Amidst the threats of a wet and a very submerged Mumbai, we set off for the school. The presentation on ‘REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE’ … a RETHINK ! by Dr Sanjeev Shevade highlighted the reasons to preach as well as practice this mantra of conservation today. He took the children back in time to highlight the environment friendly lifestyle of our previous generations and urged everyone identify practices which could be best integrated in today’s life styles. He also highlighted how to be impervious to the media hype which fuels our buying and takes us beyond our ’needs’ to ’perceived needs’ or ’wants’ !
The presentation was followed by the students crafting utility paper carry bags created out of old newspapers. The volunteers, the members of the foundation and members of POT who were present helped in the activity. The students took their creations home to share with the family and put them to a good use, avoiding the use of an additional plastic carry bag !
There were also illustrations of crafting beautiful utility articles – ‘beautility articles’ - from old and used items, such as a Pen Stand or a Planter from an old plastic water bottle, a cloth sling bag made from an old pair of trousers …. the students were also asked to take their imagination and creativity to new heights and conjure up creating such ‘beautility’ articles. They were also urged to incorporate the mantra of ‘REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE’ in to their every day living.
