Nurturing 350 + Biodiversity & Environment Ambassadors
Inaugration of the Nature Clubs for the
M M Pupils’ Own School &
Mumbadevi Vidya Mandir, Khar
Fri, 26th August 2016 saw the founding of Nature Clubs for the M M Pupils’ Own School( Gujarati Medium ) and the Mumba Devi Vidya Mandir ( English Medium ), Khar. The Nature Clubs have been established to introduce a total of 360 students of VII, VIII and IX standards to the realm of Biodiversity & Environment in a fun filled ‘hands on‘ manner. The clubs have been established in association with the Vivant Untamed Earth Foundation, with the active support from the Pupils’ Own Trust, formed by the past students of the school.
The Inaugural Programme held in the school auditorium was attended by the Principals of both schools, members of the Pupils’ Own Trust, members of the parent body – the Khar Education Society, teachers and staff of the schools, along with the members of the Untamed Earth and the volunteer students from M D College
The programme :
The programme began with ‘Saraswati Vandana’ and recitation of a poem specially written for the occasion by Ms Bharati Parekh of the Mumba Devi Vidya Mandir. Prinicpals, Ms Rekha Desai and Ms Rashmika Joshi, as well as the student representatives of both schools expressed their views about the event. Dr. Sanjeev Shevade, founder of the Vivant Untamed Earth Foundation interacted with the students and expressed the concept behind the establishing of the Nature Club and the importance of ‘hands on’ activities as a great way to learn about our natural world and mold our conduct as a responsible citizen. .A sapling of Parijatak tree ( Scientific Name : Nyctanthes arbor – tristis ) was planted to mark the occasion to symbolize the growth of the Nature Club.
As this is the season of festivals, with the biggest of them all – the Ganesh Festival - just round the corner, Ms Kirti Amritkar Wani from the Foundation, elaborated about the linkage between our festivals and the environment and ways to celebrate them in an eco friendly manner. Very appropriately, this session was followed by a thrilling experience of actually observing the sculpting of a Ganesha idol with the eco friendly ‘Shadu‘ clay in a ‘live’ demonstration, by an eminent artist and a Friend of TheUntamedEarth, Mr Bhalchandra Damle. Students were then given the ‘shadu’ clay to sculpt their own Ganesha idol. The students came up with an amazing display of skills and creative expressions as they sculpted the Ganesha idols in groups. At the end of the session, 65 idols in different forms were created by the students, which was a testimony to their fun filled involvement. It made for a great start to the Nature Club activities.
The idols were later painted with eco friendly colours and displayed on the Open Day of the school. It was a wonderful sight to see the proud students with their creations, the admiration of the attending parents as well as the other students of the school.
We will now get geared up for our next event.
